Abstract

998,107. Partition chromatography detection systems. PYE Ltd. Aug. 7, 1963 [Aug. 15, 1962], No. 31246/62. Heading B1X. A liquid-liquid chromatographic apparatus comprises a solid body adapted to carry away as a surface film, a sample of the effluent from the chromatographic column first past means to vaporize the solvent, and then past a heater to pyrolize the soulte, and means to pass the pyrolysis products to a detector. In a specific embodiment, Fig. 1, glass tube 1 has inlet 2 for argon, and outlets 3 and 4, the outlet 4 being to a flame ionization or argon detector. A portion of the eluate from column 5 is deposited on wire 7, e.g. an iron wire coated with glass fibres, the wire being passed from feed spool 8 to take-up spool 9. H.F. heater coils 10 and 11 remove the solvent and pyrolyse the solute, respectively. The solvent vapour is carried away through 3 while the pyrolysis products pass through 4 to the detector. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a wire, e.g. of Pt on the end of a dipper, is dipped into the eluate and then raised through two heating zones in a vertical tube. The first heating zone volatilizes the solvent while the second pyrolyses the solute. A flow of argon entering the tube between the two heating zones causes the solvent vapour to be swept downwards whilst the pyrolysis products are swept upwards to an argon detector. The Provisional Specification describes the use of a band in place of the wire and a flame to clean the wire before receiving the portion of eluate. The pyrolysis of the solute takes place in the ionization chamber. Specification 921,215 is referred to.
