997,894. Lap winding machines. T. M. M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. June 26, 1964 [July 4, 1963], No. 26592/63. Heading D1N. A bobbin is held against a pair of driving drums in a lap winding maching by means including a pivotally mounted motive unit so connected. to the bobbin by a linkage that the pressure applied to the bobbin is automatically augmented as the lap diameter increases. The prefered motive unit is a hydraulic jack 19 that is effective when a lap is complete to raise the lap 13 which is then released from end plates to roll over a pivoted flap 66 and table 67 to a conveyer 68. A loading assembly 16 is then lowered by the jack and, in consequence, an abutment 54 on the assembly abuts against a bowl 511 on a lever 51 causing a carrier 50 to rotate clockwise, whereupon a pocket 55 removes a bobbin 12 from a magazine 57 and raises it to the operative position. The flat 66 yields to allow the bobbin to pass. As the loading assembly 16 reaches the bottom of its stroke a toggle mechanism operates to clamp the bobbin between end plates 33. With the build-up of the lap the jack 19 pivots and the alteration in the angle of its effective stroke as it does so increases the loading pressure.
