Abstract

A tool for applying travelers to the rings of textile ring spinning and like frames in which the travelers are applied by a sliding double blade, one member of which is moved by the actuation of the tool and the other by a spring on movement of the first member.

According to the present invention the device or tool is formed with a compound blade, formed of two longitudinally extending blade sections so connected together as to enable both sections at first to move together to carry forward a traveler from the magazine and so as when one section has completed its travel to allow the other section to continue forward to carry the traveler to the ring and place it in position thereon.
When the tool is in the vertical operating position, the travelers, which are loaded onto a strip steel magazine on the side of thereof tend to fall by gravity to the bottom or front end of the magazine and the leading traveler enters the tool through a gate or opening in the side of the tool, coming to rest in the path of the compound blade.
In order to prevent the travelers from running off the magazine when in the vertical operating position, it is necessary to keep the nose of the magazine under pressure against the surface of the tool over which the compound blade slides, or against the blades when in the completed dispensing operation position. This pressureis obtained by spring loading the bracket which attaches the magazine to the side of the tool.
In order that the invention may be fully understood it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. In these drawings:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the tool in its inoperative position;
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of the tool with the plate carrying the magazine removed, the parts being in their inoperative positions as in FIG. I;
FIG. 3, 4 and show diagrammatically the operation of the compound blade in transferring a traveler from the magazine and applying it to the ring, FIG. 3 showing the preoperative position of the blade, FIG. 4 its position when the traveler has been moved to the ring, and FIG. 5 the final position of the blade when the traveler has been placed in position on the ring; and
FIG. 6 illustrates the means for pressing the nose of the magazine into a position for preventing the removal of a traveler therefrom by gravity when the tool is not being used or during the application of a traveler to the ring.
In the drawing, 1 is the ring to which a traveler is to be applied, 2 is the traveler and 3 is the magazine on which the travelers are carried. It will be seen that in FIGS. 1 and 2 no travelers are shown on the magazine.
The tool comprises two members 4 and 5 pivotably connected together at 6, the outer end of each member forming a handle so that by gripping the two handles the members can pivot about the point 6 against the action of a spring 7 to operate the traveler-applying blade formed by the compound blade 8 and 9. Each handle portion of the members 4 and 5 is preferably enclosed in a covering 10 and 11 of suitable material to allow of the handles being firmly held by the operator.
A plate 12 is secured to the member 4 and this plate carries the magazine on its outer face, the magazine being carried by a bracket 13 secured to the plate. The magazine 3 is composed of strip steel of cross-sectional dimension corresponding to that of the traveler 2 and is so arranged that the travelers thereon tend to fall by gravity to the dispensing end thereof.
The compound blade 8 and 9 is arranged to slide over the inner face of a plate 14 secured to the member 5 and when the handle portions of the members 4 and 5 are pressed together a projection 15 on the member 5 which projection is engaged in a slot 16 in the blade 9, moves the latter forward from the position shown in FIG. 3 through that shown in FIG. 4 to that shown in FIG. 5. The blade 8 IS under the influence of a spring 17 which tends to move the blade forward and which on the forward movement of the blade 9 causes the blade 8 to follow the blade 9 until its movement is arrested by coming into contact with the ring 1'. When this occurs the blade 9 continues to move forward relative to blade 8. When the blade 9 commences its forward movement its inclined face 9 engages the'end of the first traveler 2 from the magazine (which will be the top when placed on the ring) and the curved face 8 of the blade 8 engages the other end of the traveler. The blades continue to move-together until they reach the position shown in FIG. 4 carrying the traveler 2 to the position shown in FIG. 4. Shortly after reaching the position shown in FIG. 4 the movement of the blade 8 is arrested by coming into contact with the ring 1 but the blade 9 continues to move forward and this movement brings the top of the traveler over the top edge of ring 1 and then causes the traveler to pivot about its top and finally presses the traveler onto the ring by forcing the bottom on the traveler over the bottom on the ring. This final position is shown in FIG. 5.
When the traveler 2 has been placed on the ring, gripping pressure on the members 4 and 5 is released and consequent return movement thereof by the spring 7 causes the blades 8 and 9 to return to their original position i.e. that shown in FIG. 3.
As hereinbefore stated the travelers 2 are carried on magazine 3 and delivered one at a time in the path on the double blade 8 and 9, the dispensing end of the magazine being moved away from the plate 14 to allow the first traveler on the magazine to fall into the path of the double blade. Means for the movement of the magazine are illustrated in FIG. 6 and comprise a flat member 18 carried on the member 5, the movement of which causes the nose of the member 18 to engage the magazine 3 and push it away from the plate 14 to allow the traveler to fall into the path of the double blade 8 and 9. A spring may be provided to press the end of the magazine against the plate 14 but as shown in FIG. 6 the natural resiliency of the magazine may be sufficient for the purpose.
Iclaim:
l. A tool for placing travelers onto the rings of textile ring spinning, twisting and like frames comprising two members 7 connected by a pivot, first spring means biasing said members relatively about said pivot, means for mounting a magazine containing travelers on one of said members, a compound blade assembly mounted on the other of said members and comprising two relatively movable blades, means providing a motion-transmitting connection between said other member and one of said blades for moving said one blade in a direction to remove a traveler from the magazine when said two members are relatively pivoted, second spring means connected to urge said other blade to move in the same direction as said one blade, whereby when said members are pivotally operated against the bias of said first spring means, said two blades move together to perform an operation stage in the movement of a traveler from the magazine to the ring and when said other blade engages the ring said one blade may continue movement relative thereto in said direction to complete transfer of the traveler onto said ring.
2. A tool for placing travelers onto the rings of ring spinning, twisting and like frames as in claim 1 characterized in that the forward inner end of said one blade is inclined and the forward inner end of said other blade is curved to assist in the application of the traveler to the tool.

A tool for placing travelers onto the rings of ring spinning, twisting and like frames as in claim 1 characterized in that the traveler magazine is a strip of cross-sectional dimensions corresponding to that of the traveler, and that its dispensing end is normally in contact with a plate fixed to one of said members, said plate being moved away upon said pivotal operation of said members to allow a traveler to be engaged by the compound traveler applying blade assembly.

Claims (3)

1. A tool for placing travelers onto the rings of textile ring spinning, twisting and like frames comprising two members connected by a pivot, first spring means biasing said members relatively about said pivot, means for mounting a magazine containing travelers on one of said members, a compound blade assembly mounted on the other of said members and comprising two relatively movable blades, means providing a motion-transmitting connection between said other member and one of said blades for moving said one blade in a direction to remove a traveler from the magazine when said two members are relatively pivoted, second spring means connected to urge said other blade to move in the same direction as said one blade, whereby when said members are pivotally operated against the bias of said first spring means, said two blades move together to perform an operation stage in the movement of a traveler from the magazine to the ring and when said other blade engages the ring said one blade may continue movement relative thereto in said direction to complete transfer of the traveler onto said ring.
2. A tool for placing travelers onto the rings of ring spinning, twisting and lIke frames as in claim 1 characterized in that the forward inner end of said one blade is inclined and the forward inner end of said other blade is curved to assist in the application of the traveler to the tool.

A tool for placing travelers onto the rings of ring spinning, twisting and like frames as in claim 1 characterized in that the traveler magazine is a strip of cross-sectional dimensions corresponding to that of the traveler, and that its dispensing end is normally in contact with a plate fixed to one of said members, said plate being moved away upon said pivotal operation of said members to allow a traveler to be engaged by the compound traveler applying blade assembly.
