Abstract

Compositions which can be readily dyed by disperse dyes comprise an equimolar vinylidene cyanide-vinyl acetate copolymer blended with a homopolymer or copolymer of N,N-dimethylacrylamide, wherein the N,N-dimethylacrylamide polymer is one produced in the absence of oxygen in a polymerization medium which is distillable at atmospheric pressure and which is a solvent for both the vinylidene cyanidevinyl acetate copolymer and the N,N-dimethylacrylamide polymer. Specified solvents are acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl acetamide, gamma-butyrolactone, dimethyl sulphoxide, nitromethane and acetonitrile-water azeotropes. The N,N-dimethylacrylamide may be copolymerized with vinyl acetate. The preferred catalyst is benzoyl peroxide used in conjunction with potassium persulphate which may be added incrementally. An example describes the copolymerization of N,N-dimethylacrylamide and vinyl acetate in an acetanitrile-water azeotrope. The polymer solutions may be blended with the vinylidene cyanide-vinyl acetate copolymers or solutions thereof and used for spinning filaments or making films.
