Abstract

Solutions of copolymers of acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride are produced by dissolving in dimethylsulphoxide, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride and, if desired, one or more other copolymerizable monomers, in such quantities that the resulting copolymer contains 40 to 60% of acrylonitrile units by weight, the balance being largely vinylidene chloride, and polymerizing the monomer mixture obtained in the presence of an initiator and under such conditions of temperature and time that the copolymer produced has an inherent viscosity, measured in a solution of 0,5% concentration by weight, of at least 1,0 and preferably not greater than 1,8. The preferred temperature range is 44 DEG to 55 DEG C. and at these temperatures the polymerization time is 10 to 20 hours. The initiator may be of the free-radical-producing type, for example an azo-catalyst, or a redox initiator may be used, e.g. a peroxide with a reducing agent. 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine is the only other comonomer mentioned which may be copolymerized with acrylonitrile and vinylidine chloride. The examples illustrate the copolymerization of acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride in dimethylsulphoxide or dimethylsulphoxide plus water, the initiator being azo-bis-isobutyronitrile. The polymer solutions obtained can be used directly for conversion to fibres and films.
