Abstract

Compositions readily dyed by disperse dyes comprise an equimolar vinylidene cyanide-vinyl acetate copolymer blended with a homopolymer or copolymer of N,N - dimethylacrylamide. Monomers which may be copolymerized with the acrylamide include vinyl acetate, styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate and methyl meth-acrylate. Polymerization may be effected in solution, e.g. in benzene, hexane or heptane, in the presence of benzoyl peroxide or 2,4-dichloro-benzoyl peroxide, or in aqueous emulsion in the presence of sodium bicarbonate, sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate and ammonium persulphate. The blends may be prepared by dissolving the polymers in a mutual solvent, e.g. dimethyl formamide, acetonitrile or acetonitrile-water azeotrope, to form solutions which may be wet or dry spun to form fibres and filaments, or used to cast films or other shaped articles.
