Abstract

Copolymers having flame resistance and receptivity for basic and dispersed dyes are made which contain, by weight, (a) from 62 to 93.9% acrylonitrile, (b) from 5 to 25% vinylidene chloride, (c) from 1 to 10% of at least one monomer having a side group of greater stearic hindrance than the cyanide group, and (d) from 0.1 to 3% of at least one monomer having at least one free acid function. Monomers (c) specified are vinyl acetate, methyl and ethyl acrylates and methacrylates, styrene, alphamethylstyrene and acrylamide and its N-methyl and N-ethyl derivatives. Monomers (d) specified are cinnamic, itaconic and maleic acids, allyl, methallyl and vinyl benzene sulphonic acids, monovinyl phthalate and the salts of such acids. Polymerization is carried out in aqueous suspension, which may contain potassium persulphate/sulphur dioxide as a catalyst and may have a pH of 3. Solutions of the copolymers in dimethyl acetamide may be formed into fibres.
