Abstract
1365165 Carbon fibres KANEGAFUCHI BOSEKI KK 9 Dec 1971 [10 Dec 1970] 57294/71 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] Carbon fibres are formed from fibres of an acrylonitrile polymer in which a portion of the nitrile groups have been converted to amidoxime groups, by heat treating the polymer fibres at a temperature of from 200‹ to 300‹ C. under an oxidizing atmosphere and then carbonizing the heat-treated fibres at a temperature of from 800‹ to 3000‹ C. under a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The polymer has a DO/DN ratio of from 3 to 30. The ratio is measured by the ratio of the absorbancy DO, of the amidoxime group at an absorption band of substantially 6 Á, to the absorbancy DN of the nitrile groups in the absorption band at 4À5 Á. The polymers aftertreated to introduce amidoxime groups may be polyacrylonitrile or a copolymer of at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile and a vinyl or allyl monomer. A list of such monomers is given selected from the classes vinyl esters, esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, or acid chlorides or amides of these acids, allyl vinyl or vinylidene halides and sulphonates. Exemplified polymers are polyacrylonitrile aftertreated with hydroxylamine and anhydrous sodium carbonate and copolymers of acrylonitrile and vinyl acetate or methyl acrylate similarly treated. The fibres may be in the form of filaments, tows, staple fibres and yarns, woven and non-woven fabrics and knitted goods. The heat-treatment and carbonization are carried out using conventional techniques.
