997,544. Air conditioning. LUWA A.G. Nov. 20, 1963 [Nov. 21, 1962], No. 45793/63. Heading F4V. An induction air conditioning unit for railway vehicles comprises a rectangular section housing 1 is divided by a partition 2 into an upper recirculated air chamber 3 and a lower fresh air chamber 4 each of which contains a heat exchanger and a filter. The heat exchanger 8 in the chamber 3 is mounted on a perforated plate 7 and together with a filter 9 is enclosed by a cage having a perforated cover 10 held in place by a screw 13. On removal of a unit front plate 15 held by quick-action screws, the filter may be replaced by undoing the screw 13 and pivoting the cover about a hinge 12. An air inlet grid 16 is formed in the front plate 15. The fresh air chamber 4 contains coarse and fine filters 17 and 21 held in a frame 19 by a perforated holder 18 fixed to the front plate 15. Fresh air under pressure is supplied to the chamber 4 via a pipe 28 and after passing through the filters 17 and 21, an opening 24 in a partition 20, and heat exchanger 26 partially separated by a partition 20a is ejected through nozzles 27 to an outlet passage 6 to induce the flow of room air through the chamber 3. Condensate from the heat exchangers is run off through outlets 30 and 32 and the plate 15 is provided with thermal insulation in the region of the lower chamber 4. The heat exchangers 8 and 26 are connected in series to supply and return lines of a heating or cooling medium, but if required may be connected to separate pipe systems. An air conditioning unit is mounted beneath each window of the carriages of a train and fresh air is supplied from an intake point which is common to all units in one carriage or in all carriages of the train. The discharge duct 6 may be extended by two ducts one on either side of the window and extending to the top of the window. Some of the conditioned air may discharge beneath the window and some from the extension ducts, or all the air may discharge from the extension ducts.
