Abstract

804,555. Air conditioning apparatus. BRANDI, O. H. June 14, 1956, [June 14,1955; July 1, 1955; Feb. 31, 1956], No. 18500/56. Class 137 [Also in Group XIII] An air conditioning system for an enclosed space, e.g. a room 3, comprises an air chamber 2 arranged e.g. in the breast of a window 6, high pressure primary air, conducted into the chamber 2 by a small pipe 1 and sweeping the rear face of a radiator 4 constituting the front wall of the chamber 2, being discharged upwardly in front of the window 6 through, an opening 7 which is formed in a removable top cover 5 and is preferably regulated by a flap, not shown. The chamber 2, preferably provided with an insulating jacket 12, has walls 13 perforated for sound damping purposes. A channel 9, preferably partly supporting the radiator 4, collects condensate when the radiator is used for cooling purposes, condensate forming on the side walls of the chamber flowing through a gap 10 between a transverse portion and the radiator 4. A baffle 18 adjacent a lower air outlet 11 directs some of the primary air across the front face of the radiator, and a baffle 14 forms a compartment 15 which guides the primary air over the rear face of the radiator. The compartment 15 may be provided with finned surfaces 17 which can be independent of, or integral with, the radiator 4. The flow of primary air into the lower end of the compartment 15 may be controlled by a valve 16, Fig. 2, not shown, and a drip tray, not shown, can be arranged beneath the radiator in which case a drain pipe provided with a drain plug, not shown, connects the tray to the channel 9. In a modification, Fig. 3, the radiator element is divided into a number of plates 4a, 4b, and 4c, connected in series, or in parallel, so that additional dispersed air streams are passed into the room through slots 21 between the radiator elements. The inclination of the radiator plates 4a, 4b, 4c can be arranged to give the desired combination of radiation effect and direction of air streams. An upper slot, not shown, and a lower slot 23 can be provided, and their shapes and sizes can be varied according to the proportion of air it is desired to deliver from them. A removable baffle plate 14 and fin elements 17 can be associated with the upper radiator element 4a. In a further modification, Fig. 6, outside air drawn by a fan 24, through a grating 26 and adjustable louvres 27, is passed through a hingedly mounted filter 25 into the chamber 2, the fan 24 also drawing in a proportion of room air through a duct 31 which communicates, at its upper end, with a cold air channel formed between the window 6 and a second window pane 30. Room air can, alternatively, be supplied to the fan from a passage communicating with the room near the floor. When the fan is switched off and only recirculating room air is passing through the chamber 2, the louvres controlling the inflow of fresh air are closed. Louvres controlling the fresh and room, air inlets can be gauged together for manual or automatic control. The control may be restricted to the room air louvres, in which case the fan draws in the residual air from outside through automatically opening flaps. In an alternative arangement, Fig. 9, the primary air issues from directional nozzles 1a which induce room air into the apparatus, the radiator elements being provided with convector elements, if desired. The radiator may comprise more than one row of elements. A baffle 14a, pivoted at 14b to the chamber wall 13 is linked at 5a to a hinged cover plate 5 so that when the latter is swung upwards the baffle 14a is swung backwards to present the chamber 2 unobstructed for cleaning purposes. In order to minimise noise the baffle 14a is perforated and an elastic foil is stretched over it. In another arrangement air nozzles are arranged on the room side, or alternatively on the room and chamber sides, of a corrugated radiator element. In another embodiment the radiator elements enclose a space at the corner between two walls and the ceiling, a drip pan is arranged beneath the radiator leading to a waste pipe outside the wall, and primary air is supplied to the chamber through an opening in one wall. In the arrangement, Fig. 14, radiator elements 4a, 4b, 4c, are aranged around a room air exhaust pipe 36, primary air being supplied to the chamber 2 through an opening 1 in the ceiling.
