Abstract

Moulded composite bearing materials comprise polytetrafluoroethylene which has been converted to a fibrous form firmly incorporated in a cured resin matrix, the resin being a phenolformaldehyde or cresol-formaldehyde condensate, a urethane polymer or a vulcanizable rubber. Fillers, e.g. metals, graphite and molybdenum disulphide may also be present. The polytetrafluoroethylene may be converted to fibrous form by subjecting it to compaction and shearing forces at temperatures below the sintering temperature. In Examples: (1) a phenol-formaldehyde resin, graphite, lead powder and P.T.F.E. are mixed in a conventional mixer, and (2) a liquid urethane polymer, 4,41-methylene bis-(2-chloroaniline) and P.T.F.E. are compounded on a rubber mill. The products may be moulded, or coated on or laminated to rigid or flexible backing members to form plain bearings.
