Abstract

A metal working fluid comprises an aqueous solution of a polyoxyalkylene glycol and a salt of an alkanolamine and a dicarboxylic acid. The polyalkylene glycol may have a solubility in water which decreases with temperature increase and may be of 200-600 molecular weight. The dibasic carboxylic acid may have 6-40 carbon atoms per molecule. The salt may be added directly to the composition or prepared in situ. The composition may also contain an alkali metal nitrite, e.g. NaNO2, a metal deactivator, e.g. a thiazole or benztriazole, and ethylene glycol. A suitable mixture contains 2-15% polyalkylene glycol, 5-20% alkanolamine, 2-15% polyalkylene glycol, 5-20% alkanolamine, 2-15% dibasic acid, 2-15% alkali metal nitrite and 0.01-1% metal deactivator. This may be diluted 20-100 times with water. It may have a pH of 7-8. Alkanolamines specified are mono-, di- and triethanolamine, monoethanolmethylamine, monoethanol-di-methylamine, diethanolmethylamine, monoethanolethylamine, monoethanoldiethylamine, diethanolethylamine, monoethanopropylamine, monoethanoldipropylamine diethanolpropylamine, monothanolbutylamine, monethanol-dibutylamine and diethanolbutylamine. Di-basic carboxylic acids specified are: phthalic, terephthalic, succinic azeleic and sebacic acids and dimers of linoleic and linolenic acids. Polyalkylene glycols used in the examples are polypropylene glycol-400 and polyethylene glycol-300.ALSO:A metal working fluid comprises an aqueous solution of a polyoxyalkylene glycol and a salt of an alkanolamine and a dibasic carboxylic acid. The polyalkylene glycol may be a homopolymer or a random or block copolymer and may have a molecular weight of 200-600. Its solubility in water may decrease with temperature increase. Alkanolamines specified are mono-, di- and triethanolamine, monoethanol methylamine, monoethanoldimethylamine, di-ethanolmethylamine, monoethanolethylamine, monoethanoldiethylamine, diethanolethylamine, monoethanolpropylamine, monoethanoldipropylamine, diethanolpropylamine, monoethanolbutylamine and diethanolbutylamine. Dicarboxylic caids may have 6-40 carbon atoms. Acids specified are: phthalic, terephthalic, succinic, azelaic, sebacic, dilinoleic and dilinolenic. The composition may also contain an alkali metal nitrite, e.g. NaNO2, a metal deactivator, e.g. a thiazole or benzotriazole, and ethylene glycol. A suitable mixture comprises 2-15% polyalkylene glycol, 5-20% alkanolamine, 2-15% dibasic acid, 2-15% alkali metal nitrite and 0.01-1% metal deactivator. This may be diluted 20-100 times with water and may have a pH of 7-8. Polyoxyalkylene glycols used in the examples are polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol.
