Abstract

1397792 Anti-freeze compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 April 1973 [17 April 1972] 17584/72 Heading C4X An anti-freeze composition comprises a glycol, a first corrosion-inhibitor selected from cyclohexylamine phosphate and hexamethylene diamine phosphate and a second corrosioninhibitor selected from alkali metal nitrates, nitrites and carboxylates. Further inhibitors may be present, e.g. a copper-complexing agent such as benzotriazole or sodium mercaptobenzothiazole, and/or an alkali metal borate. The composition may also contain an antifoaming agent, e.g. dimethyl silicone and a dye. The. alkali metal carboxylate may be an alkanoate, naphthenate or benzoate. The cyclohexylamine phosphate or hexamethylene diamine phosphate may be formed in situ in the glycol and may amount to 0À1-5% by wt. thereof. The second inhibitor may amount to 0À01-5% by wt. of the glycol. A preferred composition comprises the glycol (ethylene or propylene glycol), the phosphate, borax, benzotriazole, and sodium nitrate, nitrite and benzoate.
