Abstract

Hydraulic fluids or lubricants comprise 30 to 70% of water and 70 to 30% of a water-soluble condensation product of ethylene and propylene oxides having a molecular weight above 1200 and, optionally, an additive (X) which is aliphatic-substituted dicarboxylic acid having at least 7 carbon atoms in the molecule and at least one carbon atom between the carboxyl groups, at least one aliphatic hydrocarbyl substituent with 4 to 30 carbon atoms being present, and/or a salt and/or an ester thereof, and which does not contain an alkylene glycol. Preferred and exemplified additive (X) is a C14- 18 alkenyl succinic acid. Other suitable additives include sodium nitrite and benzoate, phenols, amines, silicones, organic phosphates and phosphites, acids of boron and phosphorus and their salts, chlorinated paraffin waxes, and sulphurized fatty oils.ALSO:Compositions comprise 30 to 70% of water and 70 to 30% of a water-soluble condensation product of ethylene oxide with propylene oxide having a molecular weight above 1200, and which does not contain an alkylene glycol. The compositions are suitable for use as hydraulic fluids or as lubricants and may additionally contain an additive (X) which is an aliphatic-substituted dicarboxylic acid having at least 7 carbon atoms in the molecule and at least one carbon atom between the carboxyl groups, at least one aliphatic hydrocarbyl substituent with 4 to 30 carbon atoms being present, and/or a salt and/or an ester thereof. Other suitable additives include sodium nitrite and benzoate, phenols, amines, silicones, organic phosphates and phosphites, acids of boron and phosphorus and their salts, chlorinated paraffin waxes, and sulphurized fatty oils. Preferred and exemplified additive (X) is a C14- 18 alkenyl succinic acid.
