Abstract

1,247,541. Lubricant composition. MOBIL OIL CORP. 21 Oct., 1968 [13 Nov., 1967], No. 49882/68. Heading C5F. [Also in Division C2] A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an alkanephosphonate of the formula where R = Me or Et, R<SP>1</SP> = straight chain C 12 -C 20 alkyl and X is Me, ammonium, alkylammonium or alkenylammonium having 1-30 carbon atoms. Preferred compounds are dimethyl n-octadecyl phosphonate, dimethyl nhexadecyl phosphonate and the ammonium and n-octadecylammonium salts of methyl-noctadecylphosphonate. The base oil may be a mineral oil, a polyolefin, polyglycol ether or an ester of a mono- or polyhydric alcohol with a mono- or polybasic carboxylic acid.
