Abstract
1449826 Corrosion inhibition; pre-treating steel IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 March 1974 [3 April 1973] 15829/73 Headings C7E and C7U Corrosion of mild or stainless steel by acidic compounds is inhibited by adding to the acidic compound an inhibitor selected from α-hydroxy- and α-carboxy-nitriles and the alkylene oxide adducts thereof, or by pre-treatment of the steel with said inhibitor, or by both methods. The nitriles are preferably conjugated; preferred alkylene oxides are ethylene and propylene oxides, of which 2 to 25 units may be added to the nitrile. The steel may be pre-treated with the inhibitor neat, as vapour, or as a solution in e.g. water, alcohols, acids, bases such as pyridine and quinoline or a nitrile; alternatively the inhibitor may be incorporated in paints, primers, wax, polish, or interlining and packing materials, or 0À005-10 wt. per cent of inhibitor may be added to acid in a pickling bath. Preferred inhibitors are listed, as are organic and inorganic acids whose corrosive effect is inhibited.
