Abstract

995,665. Hinges and pivots. HELMETS Ltd., AND BEDFORD PRODUCTS & LIGHT ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 19, 1964 [Nov. 19, 1962], No. 43640/62. Heading E2F. [Also in Divisions A3 and F2] A mechanism for guiding a first member along a non-circular curved path relative to a second member comprises a first cam surface and a second cam follower fixed relative to the first member, co-operating respectively with a first cam follower and a second cam surface fixed relative to the second member, so disposed that the first member can move relative to the second member only along the prescribed path. The mechanism allows a transparent visor 14 to closely follow the contour of a crash helmet 10 as it is raised or lowered. The visor 14 is attached by screws or press-studs 17 to a band 16 each end of which is adjustably secured to a plate 19 by a screw 22 and nut 24 and a tongue 20 on the plate 19 which engages a slot 21 in the band 16. A pin 32 and a slot 34 of each plate 19 respectively engage a slot 27 and a screw 38 of a boss 25 secured to the helmet by grommets 26. A rubber washer (not shown) may be placed beneath an inwardly facing flange 25a of each boss 25. To hold the visor in one of three positions, one of three holes 41, 42, 43, in each plate 19 is engaged by a ball 44 urged outwardly by a spring 45. The mechanism may also be used, e.g. for supporting a machine guard, or a folding canopy on a vehicle.
