Abstract

1295708 Safety helmets GENTEX CORP 12 Aug 1970 [20 Aug 1969] 38761/70 Heading A3V A safety helmet comprises a head shell 11 and outer and inner eyeshields 12, 14 movable to an eyeshielding position from a retracted position beneath a cover 20 fixed on the shell, the shields being guided by arcuate grooves on the shell cooperating with beads formed at the side edges of the shields (not shown), the outer shield 12 being movable by means of a member 26 secured to the shield 12 and constrained to move in a slot 24 formed in the cover 20, and the inner shield 14 being movable by means of a member 28 slidable in the same slot 24, so that the inner eyesbiekl 14 may not be moved into its eyeshielding position unless the outer shield. 12 is also in this position. With such an arrangement the inner shield 14 may be of a much lighter construction than that of the outer shield 12 since it will be shielded from the effects of wind by the outer shield. The member 26 comprises a stud 31 which is located in a key-hole slot in the shield 12, the stud having a square-section shank 32 slidable in the slot 24, the edges of which are fitted with reinforcing strips 25, and a button 30 screwed onto the stud 31 so that the shield 12 may be clamped in a desired position. The member 28 likewise comprises a stud 44 located in a key-hole slot in the shield 14 and slidable along the slot 24, the shield 14 being held in its adjusted position by means of a pair of spring loaded dogs 52 frictionally engaging the edges of the slot 24 and releasable by means of pinch handles 57. In alternative embodiments the dogs may engage with teeth formed at the edges of the slot 24, or the shield 14 may be held in an adjusted position by means of a spring loaded detent member which engages with corrugated strips secured inside the cover 20 adjacent the edges of the slot 24. Also the shields 12, 14 each have an actuating member as 26 movable along separate slots in the cover 20, the actuating member for the inner shield 14 engaging the upper edge of the outer shield 12 so that as before the shield 14 cannot be lowered unless the shield is already in this position. Both shields are transparent, and the inner shield 14 is preferably tinted to reduce transmission. of light.
