Abstract

995,631. Utilizing heat from converter chimneys; heating systems for buildings. TRAFIKAKTIEBOLAGET GRANGESBERG-OXELASUND. Sept. 28, 1961, No. 34841/61. Headings F4B, F4J and F4U. Heat is extracted from the gases emitted by a metallurgical converter by means of a chimney through which the gases flow and which forms part of a heating system comprising two circuits for liquid having a common portion acting as a liquid and heat reservoir. The first, heat - absorbing circuit includes water-cooled sections of the chimney from the converter, while the other, heat delivering circuit includes a heat-exchanger in which some at least of the heat extracted is applied usefully. As shown, blow gases from a steel-making converter 1 operating with oxygen blast enter the chimney 2 which comprises two sections 3, 4, each of double-walled construction to provide channels for the water coolant. With natural circulation of the water from the base of the container 6, the two sections form parallel-connected branch circuits, but with forced circulation (Fig. 2, not shown), the sections are connected in series. The water returns heated to the top of the container, the flow being controlled by control means 16, 24 which are linked to temperature-sensitive control means 38, 39 so that the water returns at a constant and as high a temperature as possible. Hot water is drawn from the top of the container 6 and circulated by a pump 29 through the heat exchangers 32 and 49, the former being connected to a room-heating system while in the latter a controlled flow of coolant regulates the temperature of the water returning to the base of the container to a uniformly low value. The volume of the container is chosen to accommodate intermittent absorption of heat in the heat-absorbing circuit. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), a constant circulation of water through the channels of the chimney is maintained by a pump, the make-up of cold water and bleed-off of hot water from and to the container being controlled in accordance with the temperature by a three-way valve.
