Abstract

977,568. Electric thermal-storage air heaters or steam generators; furnaces. L. G. HILL. July 23, 1963 [July 26, 1962], No. 28748/62. Headings F4A, F4B and F4U. A thermal storage device comprises a mass 5 of metallic, approximately spherical particles enclosed within a thermally insulating casing 3, heated by electrical elements 7 and containing ducts 6 for the passage of fluids to be heated. The elements 7 may be nickel-chrome bars embedded in and insulated from the mass, supplied from a current transformer. Alternatively, large electrodes may pass a current directly through the mass. The device may be situated below ground and channels may be provided in the concrete substructure 4 to provide access to thermostats 8 and the elements 7 both of which may be withdrawn from the mass. The device may operate at temperatures higher than 600‹ C., and may have a capacity of at least 1 megathu. It may be cyclically controlled so as to be operable as a load factor improvement device on the electrical supply mains. An installation is described in which the heated air from the device is mixed with cooler air to give an output of temperature-controlled air. In another installation, air flows over a heat exchanger heated by fluid from the heat storage device. The device may be used for steam production at a controlled rate by direction of a fine, high-pressure jet of water along the centre of the ducts 6. The hot gases from the device may be passed through thin-walled tubes heating a furnace. Alternatively, the gases may pass from orifices into the furnace interior and through flues in the roof back to the heating device. The device may also be used to super-heat steam from a conventional boiler.
