Abstract
1,208,772. Thermal storage space heaters; boilers. ALEXANDER DUNN Ltd. 21 Dec., 1967 [29 Sept., 1966], No. 43568/66. Headings F4A and F4U. In a thermal storage air heater 10 adapted to additionally heat water and wherein a variable speed fan 14 directs air from an inlet (21, Fig. 2) through a passage 28 into an electrically heated storage mass surrounded by insulating material, the heated air on leaving the storage mass via passage 29 is selectively directed by a deflector plate 39 either directly into the fan housing 14B and then to an air outlet 25 or indirectly thereto via a chamber 35 housing a water heater 38. The fan 14 admixes the heated air entering the fan housing 14B with cool incoming air, recirculates heated air through the storage mass and emits heated mixed air through the outlet 25. A valve 51 is provided to control the volume of air leaving the outlet 25 and a further valve 50 controls the volume of air passing into the storage mass, the valves being actuated manually or automatically. The position of the valves 50, 51 together with the deflector plate 39 determine the mode of operation of the heater 10; for example with plate 39 as shown and valve 51 shut the heater serves solely to heat water. A limiting thermostat (47, Fig. 2) is positioned adjacent the blocks 13 forming the storage mass to prevent overheating. The heater 10 as shown utilizes storage blocks of iron, concrete or refractories. Alternatively hollow storage blocks filled with aluminium or salt mixtures or other medium having a suitable high latent heat of fusion or heat producing chemical action may be used. In a modification the water heater may comprise a series of finned tubes extending between upper and lower header tanks. Immersion heaters may be incorporated to supplement heating, if required. The hot water may be used to supply radiators in a central heating system. In a further modification the insulation 46 may be replaced by a water heater connected to an external storage tank. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,071,781.
