Abstract
1,034,929. Thermal storage heat exchangers. ALBRIGHT & WILSON (MFG.) Ltd. Sept. 18, 1964 [Sept. 26, 1963], No. 37926/63. Headings F4K, F4S and F4U. A thermal reservoir heated electrically or by a burner or furnace gases, and used for heat storage or regenerative or other heat exchange to heat media such as air or water, comprises a mass of ferrophosphorus or ferrophosphorus based material which may consist of blocks or tiles or a bed of granulated material. Fig. 4 shows an electric storage heater having a mild steel casing 1 containing granulated or powdered ferrophosphorus, in which heat is supplied by means of heater elements 9, vents 10, 11 being provided for air circulation. Fig. 5 (not shown) shows a thermal reservoir adapted to a water circulation system. Alternatively, two sets of pipes may be embedded within the block, one carrying a hot fluid, the other a cooler fluid. Further alternating hot and cold streams may be passed over a bed of granulated ferrophosphorus or through a single set of pipes. The blocks or tiles may be formed of cast ferrophosphorus or for greater comprossive strength formed by sintering granular ferrophosphorus in the presence of formaldehyde copolymer or by mixing with fire-clay and firing at a temperature not greater than 1200 C. Thermal reservoirs may advantageously be used in " off peak " periods and where uniform heating is desired from a variable heat source.
