Abstract

995,584. Compressors. BRISTOL SIDDELEY ENGINES Ltd. May 19, 1964 [May 24, 1963], No. 20749/63. Heading FIN. A multi-stage compressor comprises at least one compound piston 5, 19, each piston being provided with an inlet valve 21 arranged to admit gas from one stage of compression to an interstage storage space 22 within the piston, and an outlet valve 24 in the piston controlling the passage to the next stage. A two-stage rotary compressor is shown, having six compound pistons 5, 19 each slidable in one of six radially arranged compound cylinders 2,3 integral with a hollow shaft 1. The large outer ends 5 of the pistons abut the inner surface of an annular casing 7 mounted for rotation on bearings 8 eccentric to the shaft 1. A fixed housing 11 having bearings 10 for supporting the shaft has an opening 14 for the entry of gas to be compressed. When the shaft 1 is rotated, the casing 7 rotates therewith whereby gas enters the casing through a ring of scoops 12. Radially outward movement of each piston draws gas from the casing 7 through cylinder ports 16, past an annular flap valve 17 into the annular first stage compression chamber. Simultaneously gas in the interstage storage space 22 passes through piston ports 23 and the flap valve 24 into the second stage compression chamber. Radially inward movement of each piston compresses the gas in the first and second compression chambers, the gas passing respectively through piston ports 20 and the annular valve 21 to the space 22, and through cylinder ports 25 and a flap valve 26 to the interior of the hollow shaft 1.
