A device for the production of materials provided with unicoloured and/or multicoloured tuftings comprises a tufting station having electrode means 5, 9 which may be vibrated, for establishing an electric field, means for guiding a support 10, which may have an adhesvie layer 13 applied thereto by device 60, through the electric field, means e.g. conveyer belt 2 supplied with fibres by device 51, for supplying fibres 1 to the tufting station for electrostatic application to the support, and an electrically charged cover member 14 disposed between the support 10 and the fibre supplying means 2 to prevent the tufting of regions of the support masked by the cover. The cover member may be provided with a templet-type recess 14a and may have a potential of 100-10000 volts applied thereto. The cover member may be made of steel sheet or metal foil of a thickness of 1 mm. or less, e.g. made of steel sheet of a thickness of 1 mm. and having obliquely disposed cutting-edgeshaped edges. The cover member may be disposed at a distance of 5-200 mm. from the support to be tufted. The cover member may be arranged in such a way that it can be adjusted laterally and in its height. The support to be tufted may be covered simultaneously by at least two cover members 14, 140 arranged at a distance from each other, so that the material 1 to be tufted on to the support can reach the support only through the space between the cover members. The tufting material 1 may be natural or artificial fibres of a length of preferably 0À1-10 mm. The support may be textile, synthetic plastics material or paper. The adhesive may be a self-curing or thermosetting adhesive. The adhesive layer may be omitted, the fibres being fastened directly to the support, e.g. by exchange of chemical groups.
