[Also in Division F4] Apparatus for heat treating or drying fabrics comprises a housing, a heater and a fan mounted in the housing, a chest in the housing for receiving heated gas or vapour from the fan, a series of nozzles mounted in one wall of the chest, an endless band conveyer for carrying fabric to be treated past the nozzles, such endless band conveyer being made in several parts, ducts formed in the side walls of the housing for recirculating heated gas or vapour from a space between the nozzles and fabric being treated to the heater and means for driving the different parts of the conveyer at different speeds whereby lengthwise shrinkage of the fabric may be obtained. In the embodiment shown the apparatus comprises a heater incorporated with a fan 2 which is arranged to deliver its output to a chest 3 the bottom wall of which comprises a series of downwardly projecting nozzles 4 provided with outlets 5. Arranged beneath the nozzles 4 is the top flight of an endless band conveyer 7 divided into a plurality of parts. Side channels lead up from the sides of the conveyer to the upper portion of the housing. In use air or other gas delivered by fan 2 is forced through openings 5 on to fabric 6 being advanced through the apparatus on conveyer 7. The hot air or gas then circulates in the spaces 8 between the nozzles and re-ascends to the upper part through side channels or ducts. The nozzles 4 may be continuous or discontinuous over the width of the machine and each may comprise several openings 5 of suitable dimensions. The apparatus can be used for heat shrinking thick pile fabrics, manufacturing curled fabrics, heat treating fabrics not containing heat shrinkable fibres or for drying coated fabrics.
