Apparatus for sealing a closure member 16 on a dispensable metal bottle 10 containing a nuclear fuel element comprises a lower die 34 in a housing 42 in which slides an upper flanging die 38 for turning the rim of the bottle, either continuously around its circumference or at intervals, over the closure member 16, and a holder 30 for the closure member mounted on the upper die-carrier 36 which continues to lower the die 38, as by a pneumatic cylinder (not shown), after the holder has come to rest with the closure member in position in the bottle. The holder 30 is pressed downwardly of the carrier 36 by a spring (not shown), and carries on pivots 29 jaws 27 which are operated by a plunger cam 31 and follower pins 33 to engage one or more projections on a hollow stem 24 on the closure member, a nose 22 on the holder engaging the base of the stem. Instead of jaws 27, the holder may use spring clips. An inert gas under pressure is supplied to the bottle through a passage 41 before the closure is applied. A sealing ring 37, which may be located in a groove in the closure, prevents escape of the gas from the closed bottle.
