The cylinders 4 of a reciprocating pump (Fig. 1) are formed in a stationary block 3 which is fixed rigidly to a supporting structure comprising a web 2 and casing 1. Pistons 5 are reciprocated by the action of eccentrics 24, 25 on plates 26, 27 respectively, which are connected to gudgeon pins 34. A separate plate is provided, on either side of the block 3 for each gudgeon pin. Liquid enters the casing 1 through a port 10 and enters the cylinders through ports 9, which communicate with annular grooves 8 in the cylinder walls. The liquid passes under pressure through conduits 7, chambers 6 and out through the orifice 19 via a manifold 16. Each cylinder 4 communicates with a chamber 6, in which are located outlet valves 11. In an alternative embodiment functioning as a motor, pressure liquid is delivered to an orifice 43 (Fig. 3), thence to a circular groove 39, a passage 51, a passageway 49 which leads to a semi-circular groove 45. The groove communicates with the cylinders 6 via passages 52, 48 and chambers 6. On the piston return stroke the liquid flows back to the passages 52, which now communicate with a semi-circular groove 46, thence to an orifice 44 via a passageway 50 passage 53 and a circular groove 40. The direction of rotation may be reversed by applying the pressure liquid to the orifice 44. The shaft has a central passageway which supplies oil to its supporting bearings and the bearing surfaces of the plates 26, 27. The oil is removed from the motor casing through an orifice 59.
