994,645. Coating apparatus ; spray producers. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. April 24, 1962 [April 26, 1961 ; March 8, 1962], No. 15548/62. Headings B2B and B2F. [Also in Division G2] In the development of latent electrophotographic charge or conductivity images (see Division G2) by electrostatic spraying, an electrically charged liquid aerosol is formed by atomizing and simultaneously charging a solution or dispersion of a dyestuff in a liquid having a resistivity of 10<SP>3</SP> to 10<SP>8</SP> ohm-cms. by the action of a strong non-uniform electric field, at least one of the atomizing electrodes comprising filaments, bristles or electrodes having sharp edges. As shown in Fig. 1, a charged and exposed zinc oxide-in-resin coated paper 1 on an earthed support 2 is developed by means of one or more endless synthetic plastic filaments 3 looped around conductive driving rollers 4 connected to a high potential, a pad 5 impregnated with a dyestuff solution supplying the filaments which atomize the solution. The filaments may be replaced (Fig. 2, not shown) by a conductive band carrying at right angles to its plane non-conductive bristles e.g. of nylon, which pass through a container for the developing liquid. Alternatively, Figs. 3 and 4, a hollow metal atomizing electrode 11 which is connected via a pump to the dyestuff liquid reservoir 19 and is connected to a source of positive potential of 10-40 KV may be fixed vertically in a holder 14 so as to be at a height of 20-200 mms. and arranged to sweep over a grid electrode 12 at a variable potential between -1 KV and +500 V parallel to and spaced by from 1-20 mms. from the exposed photoconductive paper on an earthed metal plate 24, the paper being withdrawn from a reel 27 by guide rollers 28 and a knife 26 being provided for cutting off the finished prints. An absorbent pad 23 against which the grid 12 may be swung about pivot 22 is provided for cleaning the grid of adherent dye. The electrode and spray nozzle 11 comprises a cylinder 13 of length a of 20-100 mms., outer and inner diameter b, c of 1-3 mms. and 0À3-2 mms. respectively and a funnelled end 15 having a sharp rim of diameter d of 1-10 mms. with an opening angle α of 20-100 degrees. When the grid 12 is raised movable corona discharge needles 29, Fig. 5 (not shown), may be brought adjacent the paper to place an electrostatic charge on the paper for formation of a charge pattern on exposure to a light image.
