Abstract
A product thought to be an interpolymer is obtained by forming or completing the formation of a phenoplast or an aminoplast in the presence of a petroleum resin (including halogenated, oxidized or hydrogenated resins). The formaldehyde resin may be obtained from formaldehyde and a phenol and/or amine or amide, e.g. alkyl phenols, halogenated alkyl phenols, resorcinol, hexamethylene tetramine or diamine, tetraethylene pentamine, phenylene diamine, urea, thiourea or cyanuramide. Conventional reaction ingredients which may be present are: catalysts such as organic peroxides, sodium hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide; dispersing agents such as K or Na oleate, mono- or triethanolamine sulphonate, or metal alkyl sulphonates; hardening agents such as acetic acid, metal monochloracetates, and ammonium chloride; and water. The products find application as aqueous solutions or emulsions for impregnating cellulose, wood, laminates, sawdust, lint, flax fibre, wood fibre, paper and fabrics.
