Abstract
Fibres of natural or synthetic polyamides, acrylic polymers and copolymers and of aromatic polyesters are dyed or printed by impregnating them with a liquor or paste containing in emulsified form 1-6%, on the weight of paste or liquor, of one or more polyglycol ethers of the formula R-Y where R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or alkenyl radical with 7-22 C-atoms or a substituted isocyclic or heterocyclic radical and Y is an -O-(A-O)nH,-S-(A-O)mH or -Z-(A-O)pR1 where Z is O or S, A an alkylene radical with 2-4 C-atoms, R1 a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical or a sulphonic acid ester radical, n an integer from 2 to 7 and m and p are integers from 3 to 20. Suitable polyglycol ethers are compounds of the following formulae R-O-(C2H4O)nH where R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl with 7-20 C-atoms or alkenyl with 8-18 C-atoms or a substituted phenyl or naphthyl radical and n is 2-7: R-O-(C2H4O)pR1 where R is substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or alkenyl with 8-18 C-atoms or a substituted phenyl radical, R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or a sulphonic acid ester radical and n is 4-20; R-S-(C2H4O)mH or R-S-(C2H4O)p-R1 where R is an alkyl or substituted phenyl radical, R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or sulphonic acid ester, m is 3-7 and p is 3-8. Suitable dyestuffs are acid, 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 metal complex, chrome, reactive and direct dyes, vat dyes and their leuco compounds, indigosol, nitro, sulphur, basic, styryl and disperse dyes. Padding or printing may be effected with an aqueous medium thickened with, for example, locust bean gum, alginate or crystal gum, with the polyglycol ether emulsified therein. The dyestuff, e.g. 2 : 1 metal complex dye is dissolved in the polyglycol ether phase. The dyes may be fixed by means of a heat treatment with saturated steam at 95-125 DEG C. for 2-180 minutes or by keeping moist at 50-95 DEG C. for 1-10 hours. Other usual adjurants may be present. Examples are given in which a very large number of polyglycol ethers are specified including tridecyltetraglycol ether and the condensation product of 1 mol p-octylphenol with 4.5 mols ethylene oxide.
