Abstract
Potassium 4-sulphophthalimide is made by heating potassium 4-sulphophthalate with urea in chlorobenzene at between 150 DEG and 155 DEG C. for four hours.ALSO:The invention comprises water-soluble dyes of the general formula:- <FORM:0914249/IV (b)/1> where D is the residue of an organic dyestuff devoid of sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups, m is 1 or 2, n is an integer from 1 to 4, the nucleus A may be substituted by halogen atoms and the sulpho-phthalimido methyl groups are each attached directly to an aromatic ring of radical D. Organic dyestuff residues may be of the monoazo, triphendioxazine, thioindigoid, polycyclic quinone, e.g. isodibenzanthrone, or phthalocyanine series. The dyes are made by condensing an organic dyestuff free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups with paraformaldehyde and a phthalimide of the formula:- <FORM:0914249/IV (b)/2> or an N-methylol or N-chlormethyl derivative thereof in a sulphuric acid medium. Examples are given. On heating the water-soluble dyes in aqueous solution with hydrazine hydrate, insoluble pigments are obtained. The dyes colour textile materials of cellulose fibres by a dyeing process by applying a dyestuff of the above formula to the textile from a boiling aqueous dyebath with the addition of sodium sulphate or chloride and then immersing the material in aqueous hydrazine, which may also contain inorganic salts, possibly at elevated temperature, or by a printing process by applying a printing past containing an aqueous solution of the dyestuff and an unstable salt of hydrazine such as the carbonate, bicarbonate, sulphite, borate or trichloroacetate and, if desired, an acid-binder such as triethanolamine, adjuvants such as thiodiglycol and urea and thickening agents such as methyl cellulose, starch, locust bean gum and sodium alginate, followed by steaming or heating. In examples, (4) cotton is printed by application of an aqueous paste containing a phthalocyanine dye of the above formula, sodium alginate, thiodiglycol, hydrazine carbonate and triethanolamine followed by steaming and soaping, and (5) cotton is dyed by immersion first in an aqueous bath containing a phthalocyanine dye of the above formula, sodium sulphate decahydrate being added, and then in 5% brine containing hydrazine hydrate and ammonium chloride at the boil.
