Abstract

A waste proof finish is imparted to textile materials by treating them with a water-soluble high molecular weight finishing agent which is a natural substance containing hydroxyl, amino or imino groups, a modification product thereof or a vinyl polymer or copolymer, an alkali and a compound containing at least two groups having the formula CH2 = CH - CO - N<. Specified finishing agents are starch, hydrolysed starch, casein, tragacanth, plant gums, hydroxy-ethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl esters containing hydroxyl groups, e.g. polyvinyl acetate having a content of residual acyl groups of up to 25%, polyacrylamide, polyacrylic esters and graft polymers of vinyl esters on polyalkylene glycols and their saponification and ester interchange products. The compound containing at least two CH2 = CH - CO - N< groups may be 1 : 3 : 5-trisacroyl-s-perhydrotriazine or may have the formula (CH2 = CH - CO - NH)2-(CH2)n in which n is an integer having a value of 1-6. The alkali may be an alkali or alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, an alkali metal phosphate, ammonium hydroxide, carbonate or phosphate or a compound which liberates alkalis at an elevated temperature, e.g. an alkali metal bicarbonate or an alkali metal salt of trichloroacetic acid. The finishing agent, the compound containing CH2 = CH - CO - N< groups and the alkali may be applied to the textile materials simultaneously by dipping, padding or spraying or the three components may be applied in any desired order in two portions or individually and successively with or without intermediate drying between successive applications. When using as alkalis substances which yield alkalis when heated, a heat treatment may be carried out at 50 DEG - 170 DEG C. during or after application of the substances to the textile material. The heating may be carried out in the treating bath or subsequently by dry heating or steaming, if desired under pressure. The material may subsequently be rinsed and the alkali neutralized with acetic acid. The finishing agents may be used in admixture with plasticizers, hydrophobizing bactericidal or fungicidel agents and dyestuffs. Filaments, yarns and knitted and non-woven fabrics made from natural cellulosic fibres, e.g. cotton or regenerated cellulose, polyamide, polyacrylonitrile or polyester fibres may be treated.
