Abstract
993,668. Centrifugal pumps. HOWARD TYLER & CO. Ltd. April 17, 1963 [April 26, 1962], No. 15950/62. Heading F1C. [Also in Division H2] An electric motor and pump unit of the type in which the motor and pump are enclosed in a casing forming an upper, motor chamber and a lower, pump chamber, the chambers being joined by a relatively narrow neck portion through which extends, with clearance, a shaft carrying the motor rotor at its upper end and the pump rotor at its lower end and the liquid in the pump chamber having access to the motor chamber by way of an annular passage formed by the clearance gap between the shaft and the neck portion of the casing, is characterized in that there is provided, at one end of the annular passage, a liquid trap including a downwardly directed wall surrounding the mouth of the passage, the arrangement being such that in order to pass from the lower chamber to the upper chamber through the annular passage, liquid must pass downwardly below the lower edge of the wall. The pump unit shown comprises a pump chamber 2 connected to a motor chamber 1 by a neck 3. Hot liquid rising through the annular space 5 around the pump shaft 4 passes through a tubular baffle 12 into the space within a bell 11 carried by the shaft, and to escape from this space must pass downwardly below the lower edge of the bell and through the cooler liquid surrounding the bell and baffle. This prevents overheating of the motor by the hot liquid. Alternatively or additionally, a bell 13 and a baffle 14 are provided at the lower end of the annular space 5. In this case, hot liquid passing from the pump chamber 2 to the annular space 5 must pass below the lower edge of the baffle 14 and therefore through the cooler liquid trapped within the bell 13. Heat conduction through the bells, baffles and shaft is reduced by layers 11 A, 12A, 13A, 14A of insulating material such as impregnated asbestos, held in place by metal cladding 11B, 12B, 13B, 14B.
