993,629. Handling radio-active material. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. May 5, 1964 [May 8, 1963], No. 18716/64. Heading B4Q. A fume cupboard B shielded by a lead wall 8 and hermetically sealed by an access door 4 removable by a handling device (not shown) within the cupboard, is associated with a transfer apparatus A for transferring a radioactive source to or from the cupboard. The apparatus A comprises a lead drum 10 rotatable on trunnions 12, 12<SP>1</SP> in bearings 14, 14<SP>1</SP> carried by the wall 8, this rotation being effected by a handle 20 operating gearing 16, 18. The drum 10 has a recess 22 disposed at right angles to the rotational axis, this recess being able to accommodate a removable flask C containing the radio-active source. When the apparatus is inoperative the drum occupies the Fig. 2 position in which the maximum drum thickness h is opposite the door 4 and bridges the gap in the wall 8. In order to transfer a radio-active source to the cupboard B the drum is rotated so that the recess 22 is vertical and a lift truck (not shown) lifts the flask C containing the source into the recess in which it is retained by screwing in screws 26. The flask plug 25 is lifted into a passage 34 in the wall 8 and retained by a bolt 36, Fig. 3. The drum is further rotated to bring the passage 24 opposite the door 4 whereupon, after opening the door 4, a handling device in the cupboard may withdraw the source from the flask.
