Abstract
1,179,540. Lamps. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 6 Dec., 1968 [20 Dec., 1967], No. 58057/68. Heading F4R. A lamp 18 for illuminating the interior of an enclosure containing radio-active substances is located in a recess 20 in a solid block 24 of lead or other shielding material which is rotatably mounted in a correspondingly shaped aperture 2 in the wall 1 of the enclosure so that the lamp can be moved between an operative position, in which it illuminates the interior of the enclosure, and a retracted position in which it is accessible from outside the enclosure. The block, which is preferably spherical but may be cylindrical with part spherical ends, is rotatable on shafts 26, 27 journalled in bearings 28, 29 on the outer surface of the wall 1, each shaft having two curved lugs 30 engaged in circumferential grooves 22 on the block so that the block can be rotated by means of the crank 12 but can also be pivoted about an axis perpendicular to the shafts by means of a retractable handle 32. A second lamp may be located in a recess diametrically opposite the first lamp, and a further block 36 of shielding material may be mounted on the outer surface of the wall. In a modification a single shaft extends right through the rotatable block.
