993,615. Stretching filaments. K. H. SCHMIDT, and E. ROETHE, [representative of H. J. ZIMMER], [trading as ZIMMER VERFAHRENSTECHNIK H.J.]. April 8, 1964 [April 11, 1963], No. 14595/64. Heading B5B. Synthetic filaments are heated and moved along a free path at a speed of 140-280 m. per min., preferably 150-180 m. per min. for at least 0.065 sees. while being stretched. Preferably a heating means is interposed between stretching rollers and the filaments are drawn from the heating means at the aforesaid rate and moved along a free path for at least 0.065 sees., desirably 0.09-0.30 sees. The filaments may be pre-stretched. The treatment of nylon filaments is exemplified but all known synthetic filaments may be so treated. Polyester, polyolefin, polyacrylonitrile and polyurethane filaments are specified. Homopolymers or copolymers may be used. Treated filaments have enhanced tensile strength and equivalent, or even increased, elongation at break, while the incidence of capillary breakages is reduced.
