Abstract

A tow or lap of filaments is stretch broken into individual fibres by passage through a number of roller assemblies operating at different peripheral speeds and each roller assembly comprises pref. a single upper roller having a coating of elastically deformable material and pref. two lower roller provided with axially extending ribs whereby the filaments are positively held between the upper and lower rollers. Slipping of the filaments as they pass through the roller assemblies is eliminated allowing more accurate control over the filaments and resulting in broken fibres of a more uniform length. PRef. the ratio of the diameter of the upper roller to the diameter of the lower rollers is 1:2-6 and pref. the upper roller is carried on a ram actuated pivoting arm to allow the adjustment of the pressure exerted on the lower rollers by the upper rollers.
