Abstract

A process for the production of methallyl esters of carboxylic acids comprises the step of contacting isobutene with a palladium salt and a carboxylate which is ionized under the reaction conditions in a carboxylic acid maintained at above 100 DEG C. and up to 200 DEG C. Acids listed are acetic, propionic, n-hexanoic, adipic, benzoic and the phthalic acids. Examples describe the preparation of methallyl acetate; t-butyl acetate may be a by-product. A redox system and oxygen are preferably present in the reaction mixture.
