Abstract

992,906. Welding by fusion. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Feb. 14, 1964, No. 6397/64. Heading B3R. A device for directing a substantially laminar flow of oxygen free gas on to work during welding comprises a heat resistant nozzle containing a heat resistant corrugated component having corrugations extending longitudinally of the nozzle. The component is a spiral or a series of annular layers of corrugated strip housed in a ceramic gas nozzle surrounding a tungsten [electrode. In a modification corrugated components 14a, 24, Fig. 2, are located in nozzles 13a, 23, which respectively surround a ceramic sleeve 21 enclosing a tungsten electrode 12 and extend rearwardly of the electrode 12 to shield the weld as it cools. In a further modification, in which two corrugated components are provided, one 14b, Fig. 4, covering the arc zone and the other 24b covering the weld, the electrode 12b is interposed between the component 14b and the work. Shielding gas is introduced to each component by a pair of opposed pipes 30, 31, and 32, 33. A nozzle 13c, Fig. 5, enclosing a laminar flow producing component 14c may be used to supply backing gas to the weld. The gas is argon in all cases.
