Abstract

1,034,762. Welding by fusion. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Jan. 14, 1964, No. 1676/64. Addition to 927,729. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H5] In an arc working torch as described in the parent Specification, the gas permeable barrier is annular and is enclosed within inner and outer retaining sleeves by means of which it can be detachably mounted in the body of the torch. The barrier comprises rings 24, Fig. 2, of wire mesh located by spacers 25 and held by sleeves 27, 28. The lowest ring is preferably of larger mesh and is stronger than the others. The sleeves 27, 28 may be secured in the torch by clips 30, 38 or may be held in a place by a threaded bush and by locking between the gas nozzle and the body of the torch. As shown in Fig. 3, the permeable barrier is secured by the outer sleeve only, the inner sleeve closely surrounding the non-consumable electrode 16. The gas nozzle may or may not extend substantially past the barrier and the collet holding the electrode 16.
