Abstract

992,272. Separating liquids in a pipeline- BRITISH PETROLEUM Co. Ltd., and G. C. BAMBURY. July 11, 1963. [July 26, 1962], No. 28752/62. Heading F2N. A device for separating two liquids in a pipeline comprising at least one hollow cylindrical body having a relatively flexible side wall 1, the end walls 2 being substantially protected against distortion in an axial direction as, for example, by making them relatively thick and/ or by incorporating stiffening material into the walls. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown) the separator is mounted on a shaft which passes through a sleeve formed in the separator, rigid discs being mounted on the shaft adjacent the end walls of the separator. The shaft may be of a suitable rigid or semi-rigid material, e.g. metal, wood or nylon and the separator of a synthetic rubber or plastic. At least one non- return valve is incorporated in at least one end wall such that, on the side wall of the separator becoming worn, liquid may be pumped through the valve(s) to inflate the separator, the motion of the liquid at the downstream end of the separator being stopped during the operation. The separator is normally filled with air and a liquid. Two separators may be mounted on a common shaft (Fig. 5, not shown) and a third separator may be added, the shaft between the second and third separator preferably being provided with a flexible joint.
