Abstract
A bis-(nitrohalophenyl)methane is produced by reacting 2 mols of a nitrohalobenzene with 1 mol. of formaldehyde or an aldehyde having no alpha-hydrogen atoms, in presence of at least 90 wt. per cent sulphuric acid, oleum or sulphur trioxide at raised temperature. A number of suitable nitrohalobenzenes containing chlorine, bromine or iodine are listed. The product may be reduced to a bis-(aminohalophenyl)methane. The compound 3,31-diamino-4,41-dichlorodiphenylmethane is claimed per se.ALSO:Diaminodihalodiphenylmethanes are used as curing agents for epoxy resins. In examples, a bisphenol A-diglycidyl ether having an epoxide equivalent of 175-210 was cured with 3,31-diamino-4, 41-dichlorodiphenylmethane.
