A relief valve unit has a damping mechanism disposed between its valve member 20 and its biasing means, that is spring 23. The damping mechanism comprises two chambers 34, 35 defined by two movable walls 27, 28, a fixed wall 31 and flexible metallic bellows 32, 33. The chambers communicate with each other through an aperture 30 in the fixed wall, the aperture being restricted by a bar 29 which connects the two movable walls. The relief valve may be of the ball valve, conical seat valve, or plate valve type.
