In a Bowden mechanism, bellows 7, 8 provide a seal between abutments 3, 5 and 4, 6 on the ends of the core 1 and sheath 2 to render the space between the core and sheath fluid-tight. A gas or liquid under pressure within this space acts on the abutments to keep the core 1 in tension and the sheath 2 in compression. A valve 9 on one abutment 5 allows the space to be pressurized by gas or liquid.
