In an electric heater, in which a stream of water is heated by direct contact with an exposed resistance heating element connected to an A.C. supply, the element is held away from the wall of the water flow passage so as to define a definite path for water between the heating element and wall around substantially the whole of the periphery of the heating element. As shown, a heating cartridge is secured to a water heater base 12 of the kind described in Specification 991,409, and comprises four heating channels 6, 61 connected by grooves 8, 9 to form a continuous passage in a plastic body 1 having cover-plates 2, 3. The continuous heating element 14 is provided with four triangular cores 17 and is located by ribs 7 formed in the walls of the flow passage. The middle of the heating element, lying in groove 8, is connected to terminal 16 and to the line voltage, while the ends of the element, adjacent inlet and outlet ports 10, are connected to terminals 15 and to neutral, or alternatively the midpoint and ends of the element may be connected to neutral, the mid-points of the two halves being connected to line voltage.
