Abstract

386,491. Heating water by electricity. SPENCER, V., 2, Coogee Bay Road, Randwick, near Sydney, Australia. April 18, 1932, No. 11062. Convention date, April 23, 1931. [Class 39 (iii).] An electric water heater comprises a block 6 moulded from electrically nonconducting material such as hard rubber which contains cavities in some of which are placed heating elements consisting of three concentric electrodes 27, 28, 29 fixed in grooves in top and bottom caps 30, 31, the inner electrode being disposed on an insulating core 33 in each end of which is embedded a terminal screw 32 which receives a nut for expanding a rubber gasket 37 against the walls of the cavity to form a watertight joint. The water flows in series through the cavities from inlet 11 to outlet 12, cavities not provided with heating elements being provided with filling pieces 14. The electrodes are provided with gaps 35, 36 at top and bottom in order to allow the water to flow between them. In a 3-phase system using 3 heating elements, the middle electrodes of all the elements are connected together while the three supply leads are connected to each of the three pairs formed by taking the inner electrode of the first element and the outer of the second, the inner of the second and the outer of the third, and the inner of the third and the outer of the first.
