A two web-roll support assembly comprises a pair of side-plates 10 which support on a cross-shaft 11 a pair of support members 12 capable of moving transversely on rollers 13. Each support member 12 rotatably supports an arm 19 on a trunnion or stub axle 21, and the pair of arms 19 are provided with trunnions 23, 24 for rotatably supporting web-rolls 22 and 26, respectively. Since the arms 19 are not mounted on a cross-shaft, a replacement web-roll 22 larger in radius than half the length of the arms 19 may be mounted on the trunnions 23. Alignment of the arms 19 is achieved with gearing 29, 31-33, for each arm, in cooperation with a common motordriven cross-shaft 34. Acceleration of the replacement web-roll 22 for splicing is achieved when the roll 22 is brought into engagement with a roller 47. The roller 47 and a roller 51 are in driving contact and both are mounted on a spring- loaded arm 48 pivoted at 49. The running web passes over a roller 52 mounted between the side-plates 10. When the replacement webroll 22 is raised the roller 51 is brought into driving engagement with the web 27 and roller 52 so that the web 27 indirectly drives the web-roll 22. Splicing apparatus (not illustrated) is provided for splicing the replacement web to the running web 27 and severing the trailing end thereof. The web roll support assembly is such that one or more assemblies may be stacked one upon the other.
