Abstract

1,139,975. Feeding webs. BLACK CLAWSON CO. 28 March, 1966 [29 March, 1965], No. 13643/66. Heading B6B. In a web-roll changing device, the fresh web can be spliced selectively to either side of the running web regardless of the amount of web remaining on the unwinding web-roll. A reel stand 15 has a pair of rotatable spiders 18 axially adjustable to accommodate web rolls of various widths, and a pair of diametrically opposed web-severing means 57 positioned between guide rollers 35 mounted on the arms 34 of the spider 18. The replacement web-roll is accelerated up to speed by one or other of a pair of driving belts 92. Splicing of the running web to the leading edge of the replacement web previously prepared with a perforated adhesive strip, is caused by one of two pressure rollers 25 and 26, which resiliently urges the running web W into engagement with the rotating replacement web-roll 20. To provide clearance for unrestricted rotation of the spiders 18, the two pressure rollers 25, 26 and associated apparatus are mounted between a pair of support members 100, slidably mounted for movement by screwjacks 148, Fig. 6, on adjacent end stands 95. The pressure roller 25 is carried by the forward ends of a pair of horizontally extending arms 110. The rear portion of each arm 110 is pivoted at (111, Figs. 9 and 10) to a block (112) slidably mounted within guide-ways (114) carried by the support member 100. Thus the roller 25 is movable vertically and horizontally with respect to the support member 100. Horizontal movement is controlled by two fluid cylinders (152, 153, Fig. 9) and vertical movement is controlled by a system including a fluid cylinder 120, Fig. 6, connected to the arm 110 through a lever 122 and a cushion pressure cylinder 125. The pressure roller 26 is carried by a pair of arms 130, pivoted to the arms 110, pivotal movement being controlled by a pair of fluid cylinders 135. A guide roller 145 mounted between the arms 110, directs the running web W around pressure roller 25. To splice with the inside surface of the web of the replacement web-roll 20 uppermost, the running web W is urged into engagement with the rotating web-roll 20 as shown in Fig. 1 and (Fig. 11). When the outside surface of the web is required to be uppermost, pressure roller 26 is moved round into engagement with the running web W to urge the same into engagement with the rotating web-roll 20 as shown in Fig. 12. A photo-electric cell 160, Fig. 6, governs the indexing of the reel stand spider 18 to position the web-roll 20 adjacent the splicing apparatus; and a photo-electric cell 161, Fig. 6, scans the rotating web-roll 20 for the leading edge and in response thereto initiates the splicing and cut-off sequence.
