Abstract

In the production of crimped yarn, at least one blended spun yarn of "non-thermoplastic" fibres and thermoplastic fibres in an amount of at least 10% and not more than 90% by weight based on the total weight of the yarn is temporarily highly twisted e.g. by false-twisting, in the same or opposite direction as or to the spinning twist, and heat-set using dry heat at a temperature of at least 150 DEG C., and may then be partially untwisted with or against the spinning twist. The non-thermoplastic fibres may be of natural cellulose such as cotton, regenerated cellulose, wool or silk, and the other fibres may be of a cellulose derivative such as cellulose acetate or a synthetic polymer e.g. polyamide, polyester, vinyl polymer or copolymer, polyolefin. Heat-setting may be accomplished by passage of the yarn through a tube containing an electric heating coil or by contact with a heated metal surface. The blended yarn may be impregnated before or during the high-twisting with a solution of a condensable resin-forming substance e.g. a methylol compound of urea, a urea derivative or melamine. After the high twisting, the yarn may be treated with an alkali solution of mercerizing strength and/or two or more yarns may be plied.
