Abstract

A grinding wheel for electrolytically assisted grinding having an electrical resistivity below 0.0065 ohms/c.c. is formed from a moulded and cured mixture of 10 to 50 volume per cent of (a) electrically non-conducting abrasive particles, and up to 90% volume per cent of (b) a combination of 40 to 75 volume per cent of deoxidized copper or copper alloy powder having a specific resistance less than 7.5 microhms/cm. and 60 to 25 volume per cent of a powdered thermosetting resin. A liquid binder, e.g. furfural or a liquid synthetic resin may also be included in the mixture. In examples, wheels are made from alumina, copper and phenol-formaldehyde resin, with and without furfural as a binding assistant. The phenolic resin may be replaced by an epoxy resin.ALSO:A grinding wheel for electrolytically assisted grinding having an electrical resistivity below 0.0065 ohm/c.c., is formed from a moulded and cured mixture of (a) 10-50% (by volume) of electrically non-conducting abrasive particles and (b) up to 90% a combination of 40-75% of deoxidized copper or copper alloy powder of specific resistance below 7.5 microhm/cm. and 60-25% of a powdered thermosetting resin. A liquid binder e.g. furfural or a liquid synthetic resin may also be included to assist shaping before cure. In examples wheels are made from alumina, copper and phenolic or epoxy resin, with and without furfural and have resistivities of 0.000434 and 0.0059 ohms/ cm. respectively.
